For more than 10 years of her work with acrylics on paper, Svetlana Rumak has created so many original techniques, discovered so many valuable tips and tricks that this abundance can't be physically captured in one technique!))

Gradually, all the previously scattered techniques started to form separate "units". Usually there are 5-10 different approaches gathered in one "unit".
Approaches in the units fit together and complement each other, they create complete, technically balanced work. This is how 5 different monochrome techniques were created and we're going to learn one of them at this lesson.

A key feature of this technique is the fact that the work is created on textured paper. Many approaches used in this technique let us play with the texture emphasizing it.

Medium and supplies
What are the medium and supplies required for the lesson?
Watercolour paper
Svetlana's recommendation:
I prefer pure white watercolour paper. The texture here is a crucial characteristic – it should be homogeneous, like "fine-grained". Torchon paper and bulked paper (like handmade one) don't suit here as some of the techniques may not work on them.
My choice for now is Canson Montval – 200 or 300 gram. I can't say it's ideal, I'm still in search of "perfect paper".)))

Other kinds of paper
Svetlana's recommendation:
You'll also need:
1. Carbon copy paper (black, blue, purple – as you wish)
2. Small piece of tracing paper
3. Several sheets of writing or printing paper
4. Whatman drawing paper or drafting paper
Acrylic titanium white
Svetlana's recommendation:
The only acrylic used here is titanium white. Buying whitening, pay attention to the fact that zinc white is less covering and can have less opacity. That's why titanium ones is the best choice.

I prefer the following Russian manufacturers of the acrylics like Tair – "Acryl Art" presented in the photo is one of them. You can also try any other acrylic paint for art work.
Do not use acrylics from DIY stores like for painting furniture or acrylics for decorative purposes because the quality of it lower than of art acrylic and its purposes do not suit for this technique.
Paintbrushes
Svetlana's recommendation:
For this technique you'll need high quality synthetic hair brushes.
You'll need thin round brushes – №1,2,3.
Sometimes on the finish layer I like taking a deeper look into fine details and then I use the rigger like №0/3. Lately I've been using the paintbrushes from "Autumn" series by "Malevich" company.
Pencils
Svetlana's recommendation:
To create works in this technique, you'll need:

1. Watercolour pencils
I prefer Faber Castel pencils – Albrecht Dürer
product line. My favourite tints for the works in this technique are: Blue Violent 137 and Prussian Blue 246
2. Graphite mechanical pencil – I'm using 0.7 lead but you can use thinner ones.
As for thickness, I usually choose HB, F, H, 2H – it shouldn't be too soft, hard lead is more preferable. If you have 3H and harder, it's better that B or 2B.
Palette-knife
Svetlana's recommendation:
We'll need a small palette-knife (3 – 4.5cm).
If it's your first time palette-knife purchase, pay attention to the comfortable handle and high-quality metal.
Fixative
Svetlana's recommendation:
When the work is finished, I cover it with fixative.
I usually use Sennelier spray fixative – matte varnish (the can is white and green).
It creates perfect invisible cover which isn't shiny and doesn't change the colour of the work. It also protects the work from dust, moisture and UV rays. Everything is great in this fixative except its smell...))))
If you can't find this fixative, you can try other ones, but please don't try to save on it. Fixative of poor quality can spoil your work! I'll share all the details with you and show how to use it at the lesson.
