Botanical illustration

Lesson 3 from the course on monochrome techniques
RU
What is this lesson about?
Unique content only! The result of the long-standing expertise and experience!
First-hand tips and tricks from the author.
For more than 10 years of her work with acrylics on paper, Svetlana Rumak has created so many original techniques, discovered so many valuable tips and tricks that this abundance can't be physically captured in one technique!))

Gradually, all the previously scattered techniques started to form separate "units". Usually there are 5-10 different approaches gathered in one "unit".

Approaches in the units fit together and complement each other, they create complete, technically balanced work. This is how 5 different monochrome techniques were created and we're going to learn one of them - "Botanical illustration" - at this lesson.

Botanical illustration captivates artists of several generations so much that it gradually turns from "scientific drawing" into an independent artistic movement in the visual arts and does not lose its relevance up to this day. Svetlana creates her own, as always unique technique, thanks to which many simple techniques are "strung" on each other like beads on a thread, turning into something more than just a page from the "botanical atlas", turning into something mystical, full of secret and obvious meanings - a fascinating game of images and symbols.
Video lesson lasts more than 3 hours!
Recorded with two cameras at the same time.

Medium and supplies
What are the medium and supplies required for the lesson?
Whatman drawing paper (or drafting paper)
Svetlana's recommendation:
I prefer using whatman drawing paper for this technique.
I also advise using paper stretching boards and strain the whatman on them. I like paper stretchers made from fiberboard, regular plywood ones can be distorted because of moisture.
Whatman is a perfect match for this technique - it's white, thick, smooth, low-cost and accessible to everyone.
If you can find whatman, you can replace it with drafting paper or even paper from sketch books - try, test, experiment!))
Please do share the results of your experiments in the closed group - many of the participants will find it interesting!))
Acrylic paint - titanium white and any black
Svetlana's recommendation:
I use acrylic paint in this technique. Buying whitening, pay attention to the fact that zinc white is less covering and can have less opacity. That's why titanium ones is the best choice.
You'll also need black acrylic and if you want to add colour, you can use colourful acrylic. I often tend to soft, tender pastel tints - lavender, pink, violet, light-blue. Choose the colour up to your liking and don't be afraid of experiments.

I prefer the following Russian manufacturers of the acrylics like Tair - "Acryl Art" presented in the photo is one of them. You can also try any other acrylic paint for art work.
Do not use acrylics from DIY stores like for painting furniture or acrylics for decorative purposes because the quality of it lower than of art acrylic and its purposes do not suit for this technique.
Paintbrushes
Svetlana's recommendation:
For this technique you'll need high quality synthetic hair brushes.
You'll need thin round brushes for fine details - №1 and 2, and one wide brush like №26, № 30
Sometimes on the finish layer I like taking a deeper look into fine details and then I use the rigger like №0/3. Lately I've been using the paintbrushes from "Autumn" series by "Malevich" company.
If you're using different paintbrushes, paint brushes, pay attention to the hair length, it shouldn't be too long. The paintbrush should be resilient, it's very important in this technique.
Small flat tip paintbrushes (№0, №1) will suit for large areas - they are more resilient.
Watercolour pencils
Svetlana's recommendation:
You'll need all kinds of black and grey watercolour pencils.
There are 4 brands which sell great high-quality watercolour pencils:
1. Cretacolor - Marino product line.
My favourite grey pencil from this line is Dark Grey. It helps to create soft neutral grey graphite colour without "graphite shine".
All my works in this technique were made with this very pencil.
2. Faber Castell - Albrecht Dürer
product line. I recommend black pencil №199 from this product line, it's deep, intense, velvet black colour.
3. Dearwent - Watercolour product line.
4. Koh-I-Noor -this brand is well-known for many of us since childhood, we all used their graphite pencils or erasers. By the way, Koh-I-Noor was the first company who started watercolour pencils production.
One of the ways to add colours to the work is to use watercolour pencils and here you have a great field for experimenting!))
Other supplies
Svetlana's recommendation:
You will also need:
1. Carbon copy paper (black, blue, purple - as you wish)
2. Drafting ink (I use black)
3. Several sheets of writing or printing paper
4. Artists' masking latex (there are many different kinds of it on sale, I'm using Maimeri one - it's liquid enough and has airtight cap which prevents it from drying and makes durable for several months).
5. Tea. Black tea of any quality)) You can use cheap one.
6. Rollers from synthetic fibre and cuvette brush for rolling out the paint.
7. Tissues or paper towels with texture.
Fixative
Svetlana's recommendation:
When the work is finished, I cover it with fixative.
I usually use Sennelier spray fixative - matte varnish.
It creates perfect invisible cover which isn't shiny and doesn't change the colour of the work. It also protects the work from dust, moisture and UV rays. All the details of this process are covered at the lesson.
